Accidental Muse
Considering this is a piece on finding some inspiration of late, I’m not 100% sure on whether I should publish this one or not, but I’ll put it down to my aversion to my rhymed poems and push through it. I did a couple of pieces on muses as part of the ‘Halls of Pandemonium’ writing challenge back in May, so this, in part came from there and part from elsewhere.
Reading in the heat,
I can feel my perspiration,
though what my eyes consume
brings me sudden inspiration
sometimes it’s the style
or what is found inside,
but whatever it is, often
turns to literary guide
I like the fact, I’ve stumbled on
or unintentionally found
something to spark fresh ideas
when my brain has run aground
though when it’s hurt and pain I read
I feel conflict, thoughts turn sad
ideas from your misfortune,
they don’t make me feel so glad
It isn’t even often that
they’re directly in my writing,
but they give me starting reference
and its that which feels exciting
It makes my thoughts move in a way
that stops me feeling stuck
my stilled pen moves freely again
more average poems born, what luck!
It happens yet more frequently
though the ‘when’ I cannot choose,
so, I sit and ponder whether I
have found an accidental muse
My writing is free, though writing does take time, especially when balancing work and family life. If you wish to support my writing, I have a subscription option or if that’s not for you, there is also my ‘Buy Me A Tea’ feature, above, which all help to keep the words flowing.

“An accidental muse” is so fitting. Sometimes inspiration does arrive through the most unexpected doors. And, as an aside, I too have an aversion to my rhymed poems. I have a few yet to share or not to share. That is always the question. :)
This is so good. I honestly don't think I've ever seen anyone write a poem about the actual, messy process of hunting for inspiration before. Most people just show you the final artwork, but you're letting us hang out in the back while you figure things out.
I love how brutally honest it is. Inspiration never arrives when you're sitting around waiting for it, it just sneaks up on you while you're reading in the heat. And that last line about more average poems being born and what luck, that genuinely made me laugh. Such a refreshing read today!
