Super Mario Springtime
I woke up this morning at 4:30am, birdsong was in the air. It was pleasant and I briefly thought that as it is the start of spring, I might craft a poem for the occasion.
I then fell back into a sleep for a while, dreaming of Super Mario and their characters appearing in my street and on the grassy field in front of my house. This is possibly from playing some of the games with my daughter of late, or from watching the trailers for the upcoming movie. She’s been a big fan of Super Mario ever since watching me play one of the games three or four years ago, and is looking forward to a cinema trip in a couple of weeks.
I’ve written this one, loosely based on the dream, as a bit of fun for her (so it may not land as well if you’re unfamiliar with the characters) and thought I’d also share it here, where most of my poetry lives. I was playing around with some of it out loud before she went to school this morning and she seemed to enjoy it.
I woke today to the song of a bird,
upon rising, it was the first thing I heard
I thought that it sounded a wonderful thing
whilst remembering that it’s the first day of spring.
I thought I’d see sparrows, maybe a finch,
What I saw though, made me give myself a pinch.
For out by a bush, stood munching some berries
was green little Yoshi, I heard him say ‘cherries’.
And where I expected to see slugs and snails,
came marching some goombas, some even had tails.
Then from round the corner, all in coloured dresses,
came Peach, Rosalina and Daisy; princesses!
I wondered when blossom would form on the trees
and from that direction, I heard someone sneeze.
I glanced up to the branches, and what did I see?
Donkey Kong, saying ‘sorry, that was me’.
Suddenly the birdsong grew deeper in bass
and some nearby Toads had fear etched on their face.
For, pulled on a chariot, which did seem quite weird
came Bowser, the King of the Koopas, they feared.
He roared and then said 'I ask you to yield
for I’d quite like to make a fire on this field.
I don’t wish to ensnare princesses today,
for I quite like spring and have something to say’
'You see us Koopas at spring, we can be quite nice fellows
I’ll make fire this evening, we’ll all eat marshmallows.
I just can’t explain why I do love this season,
but come and you’ll see I’m a Koopa of reason'.
We look forward to feasting, we just cannot wait,
to load up those treats this spring eve, on a plate.
Though we couldn’t help mentioning, talking to others
that we seemed to be missing the Mario brothers.
Toad shook his head, said, ‘I’m not sure they’re coming’,
the folks on the corner require some plumbing.
I do hope they quickly resolve that scenario,
It'd be so nice to eat with Luigi and Mario.

Oh, I love this so much! I am a Mario fan, and my son who is 22 is a huge Mario fan. We are all excited for the upcoming move in our household.
